Here’s the response of James Hamblin, Welsh Conservatives candidate in the constituency of Caerdydd Penarth, to the email about Welsh-medium education. The response was received on 3 May 2026 (after the deadline of 30 April 2026 that was stated in the original email).
Dear ___
Thank you for taking the time to set out your views so clearly and for your commitment to strengthening Welsh-medium education.
The Welsh language is a valued part of Wales’ identity, and Welsh-medium education plays an important role in its future. I recognise the strength of feeling behind the points you raise and the ambition to ensure that more children are able to access Welsh-medium education if they and their families choose to do so.
The aim of growing the number of Welsh speakers is widely shared across Wales, and there is a clear consensus on the importance of supporting the language through education. The proposals you outline reflect genuine priorities around access, continuity of provision, and the quality of learning environments, all of which are important considerations in ensuring Welsh-medium education is both attractive and sustainable.
There is also a strong case for ensuring that Welsh-medium schools are properly resourced, with suitable buildings and facilities, and that expansion is planned carefully so that growth is supported by the necessary teachers, leadership and infrastructure. Maintaining high standards alongside expansion will be essential if Welsh-medium education is to continue to thrive.
From a Welsh Conservative perspective, there is support for ensuring real choice for parents in education and for strengthening Welsh-medium provision where demand exists. There is also recognition that investment in school infrastructure should be prioritised where need is clear, and that long term planning should support both accessibility and quality across the system.
Engagement with communities, educators and local authorities will continue to be important in shaping how Welsh-medium education develops, and I appreciate you taking the time to share your detailed proposals.
Thank you again for writing and for your interest in this important area.
Kind regards,
James Hamblin
