Here’s the response of Plaid Cymru in the constituency of Caerdydd Penarth to the email about Welsh-medium education. The response was received on 30 April 2026.
We are supportive of your campaign. Two of our candidates are Plasmawr alumni, and many of us have immediate family currently attending Glantaf, so we recognise the worrying situation that Welsh-medium education in Cardiff currently faces. As the nation’s capital we believe that this city should be a place for the language to thrive, and we will do what is in our power to ensure that this can happen.
1. Cymraeg i bawb / Welsh for all
Welsh is a language that belongs to all who live here no matter their background, and we want to ensure that everyone has the chance to access Welsh education if they wish. As part of our intangible cultural heritage and present, we think that people should have the opportunity to engage with the language.
2. Welsh-medium All-Age School (3-19) for Butetown, Grangetown and surrounding areas
We support the establishment of a Welsh-medium school for the South of Cardiff as part of a wider initiative to improve Welsh-medium education in Cardiff.
3. Protect, and invest in, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern
Bro Edern should not be moved away from the East of Cardiff. This would create a significant gap in the ability of children from the east to access Welsh-medium education. We believe that as part of a wider strategy to improve Welsh-medium education in Cardiff, there should be upgrades to the facilities of current Welsh-medium schools. This includes funding Bro Edern adequately, as well as the other existing Welsh-medium schools.
4. Investment programme
We believe that every child should learn in an appropriate environment. The current state of the infrastructure in Plasmawr, Glantaf and Bro Edern is not acceptable, and Plaid Cymru will hold Cardiff Council to account in the council chamber. Plaid Cymru Members of the Senedd will also put pressure on Cardiff Council to resolve this.
5. A programme of growth
We will put pressure on Cardiff Council to grow Welsh-medium education in the city in line with the law.
