Here’s the response of Anthony Slaughter, Green Party candidate in the constituency of Caerdydd Penarth, to the email about Welsh-medium education. The response was received on 30 April 2026.
1. Cymraeg i bawb / Welsh for all
Greens support the 1 million speakers target, but much more needs to be done to make it realisable, not kicking progress into the long grass. We want Welsh education to be actually available on the ground to everyone, especially more deprived and ethnically diverse areas so that every child can have this enriching education. We also want more provision of Welsh lessons for refugees and asylum seekers.
2. Welsh-medium All-Age School (3-19) for Butetown, Grangetown and surrounding areas
I support this campaign, and am proud of the work our local Green councillor has done with campaigners to raise the pressure on Cardiff Council to get this school built. I work to ensure that Welsh medium education is practically available in every area of the city.
3. Protect, and invest in, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern
Bro Edern should stay where it is and receive the upgrades required to give learners a high quality education.
4. Investment programme
We’ve seen a programme of new school building in some parts of the city, Welsh medium education deserves the same level of investment and I’m committed to working with campaigners to hold the council to account and secure real action.
5. A programme of growth
Cardiff Council has been totally lacking in ambition to expand Welsh medium education, particularly with the urgent need to provide a secondary school for families in Butetown and Grangetown – this is a matter of social justice.
We’ve heard a lot of warm words about the million speakers target and Cymraeg I Bawb, but it amounts to little if we don’t give Welsh medium education the attention it needs on the ground, with the next Welsh Government using every lever it has to change this. We need to move away from the current model where parents need to demonstrate active demand to one where we know many more families will choose Welsh medium education if it is available.
