    Dear Senedd 2026 candidate

As part of your responsibility as a candidate in the city in the 2026 Senedd elections, we ask you to declare your support for the following commitments to develop Welsh-medium education in the city.

We ask you to respond by 30 April at the latest as we intend to publish your responses for the public to consider. We will also publish the names of any candidates who do not respond. Here are some of the red lines on which we want your commitment –

    1. Cymraeg i bawb / Welsh for all

We ask you to affirm that the Welsh language belongs to everyone from all backgrounds and that progression through Welsh-medium education in their community is a right for every child in accordance with one of the main principles of the Curriculum for Wales; commit to do all you can to ensure that all immigrants and asylum seekers and their families have early and easy access to Welsh-medium education; commit to support the target of creating one million Welsh speakers by 2050.

    2. Welsh-medium All-Age School (3-19) for Butetown, Grangetown and surrounding areas

We ask you to commit to supporting the establishment of a Welsh-medium school for all ages (3-19 years, which includes nursery, primary and secondary) with extensive resources for the community in which it is located and to serve the children and families of Butetown, Grangetown and neighboring areas in the south of the city, which should be established immediately. We ask you to support the need for Welsh-medium schools from nursery to secondary at every compass point of the city.

    3. Protect, and invest in, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern

We ask you to make an unequivocal statement that Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern should not be moved from the heart of the east Cardiff community and that the school’s resources need to be upgraded so the school has high-quality buildings that are fit for teaching purposes in the 21st century.

    4. Investment programme

We ask you to commit to supporting a Cardiff-wide transformative programme that addresses the quality of buildings in Glantaf, Plasmawr, and Bro Edern and that you hold Cardiff Council to account for their failures to date.

    5. A programme of growth

We ask you to commit to pressuring Cardiff Council to implement a programme of significant growth in Welsh-medium education, with a rapid and significant increase in the proportion of children who will start in Welsh-medium education across the city over the next few years, in accordance with the Council’s responsibility under the Welsh Language and Education (Wales) Act 2025. All new primary schools established in Cardiff should be Welsh-medium.

We look forward to receiving your responses promptly by 30 April 2026.
