Response from Robert Griffiths, Communist Party of Britain candidate (Caerdydd Penarth)

Here’s the response of Robert David Griffiths, Communist Party of Britain candidate in the constituency of Caerdydd Penarth, to the email about Welsh-medium education. The response was received on 28 April 2026.

1. Cymraeg i bawb / Welsh for all

I have declared publicly and in meetings that I believe the Welsh language belongs to everyone in Wales, and who comes to settle in Wales, whatever their mother tongue. It is essential, therefore, that families who come to live here, are given every possible support to contribute to this objective. I supported the aim of creating a Wales in which at least half the population can speak Welsh by the middle of this century, when addressing the annual conference of the Welsh Language Society  as a guest speaker some 10 or 15 years ago.

2. Welsh-medium All-Age School (3-19) for Butetown, Grangetown and surrounding areas

As someone who campaigned alongside the late Owen John Thomas AS, and my elder sister, to establish a Welsh-medium nursery school in Splott more than 20 years ago, I support these aims. My sister’s children all went on to enjoy the benefits of a Welsh language education in the end (as did all my children in Roath)

3. Protect, and invest in, Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern

All my daughters attended secondary school at either Bro Edern or Glantaf. Of course these schools must enjoy the highest possible standards in terms of resources and facilities, as should every school in Wales.

4. Investment programme

I fully accept these commitments.

5. A programme of growth

The growth of Welsh-medium education in Cardiff has warmed my heart as native of this city! But it has been a long hard battle to secure this growth – and we must ensure that the enemies of the language do not win any ground in the May elections. I have shown my colours in support of the Welsh language during the past 50 years.
